Financial wisdom for the young and old

There are several different ways to get a Free annual credit report. They can be ordered online from the FreeAnnualCreditReport.com website, they can be ordered by telephone at 1-877-322-8228 or they can be requested by mail.

Everyone should be knowledgeable of the information contained in their credit report. That information can influence the type of home they are able to buy, the type of job they may be hired for, as well as many other important aspects of their lives. Many organizations and companies are using credit scores and information contained in credit reports to decide if a person is responsible enough to work for them or should be able to receive credit.

There are three well known credit reporting agencies: Experian, Equifax, and Transunion. The information that they report should be correct, but sometimes may include information that needs to be corrected. The three agencies maintain more than one hundred and ninety million credit files. It would be almost impossible to have a one hundred percent accuracy rate base on numbers alone.

Every American is eligible to receive a Free annual credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies. They do not have to be ordered all at the same time. This right is due to the Fair And Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003. Before this act was passed, all consumers were not eligible to receive a free annual copy of their credit reports.

Getting Free annual credit reports from the three agencies is the first step to credit repair. After reviewing the reports, a detailed list should be made of all the incorrect information shown. The creditor reporting the incorrect information should then be contacted to request removal of the false information. If the creditor does not provide assistance, the information can be disputed with the credit bureau directly. The first steps to cleaning up credit is knowing what is listed on the credit report and then working to clear up any information that is not reported correctly. Once those steps have been taken, consumers can move on to other important tasks that can help improve their credit scores.
